The Two Rivers and Four Lakes refer to the Guilin ring city water system composed of Rong Lake, Shan Lake, Gui Lake, Mulong Lake, Li River, and Taohua River, forming a beautiful ring-shaped scenic belt in the center of Guilin city. Water tours of Guilin began in the Tang Dynasty and flourished in the Song Dynasty, when the city was dotted with lakes and ponds and had a well-developed water system, allowing a small boat to take in all the city's scenic spots. Today, the Guilin Two Rivers and Four Lakes ring city water system has revived its former prosperity, creating a ring city waterway comparable to Venice, a unique sight in China. Taking a boat tour of the Two Rivers and Four Lakes has become the preferred way for tourists from home and abroad to explore the new Guilin city.

The Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area truly embodies the beautiful landscape of "thousands of peaks standing in the wild, a river embracing the city" and the harmonious scene of "the city within the scenery, the scenery within the city." As the only classic circular tour route in the center of Guilin city, a nighttime boat tour allows visitors to enjoy over a dozen traditional famous mountains such as Elephant Trunk Hill, Fubo Hill, Diecai Hill, Laoren Hill, and Baoji Hill; historical sites along the Taohua River including the Relic Pagoda, Hongqiao Dam, Zhuzi Archway, and Dujiao Pavilion; and explore classical Chinese gardens—Rong and Shan Lake scenic area, the ecological garden of harmony between heaven and man—Gui Lake scenic area, and the Song Dynasty historical and cultural park—Mulong Lake scenic area. Visitors can also admire the World Famous Bridges Expo Park, Famous Flowers and Trees Expo Park, Pavilion and Terrace Expo Park, and Sculpture Expo Park. Performances along the shore, such as local opera, the cormorant fishing show—Gui Lake Fishing Lights, classical dance—Half Zither Moonfall and Song Dynasty Elegance, and the 3D light show on Mulong Lake's ancient city wall, are dazzling, offering a glimpse into why there is a saying: "Would rather be a Guilin native than an immortal."

The Two Rivers and Four Lakes scenic area, combined with the world-renowned Li River scenic area, forms the essence of Guilin's tourist routes.
