Sissoo rosewood, one of the world's precious timbers, is traditionally known as old redwood. The wood is hard and heavy, with a fine and oily texture, capable of sinking in water, with an average radial pore diameter no greater than 200 microns; at 12% moisture content, its air-dry density exceeds 0.85g/cm³. The heartwood ranges from reddish-brown to purplish-red, emitting a spicy, slightly acidic aroma when sawn. The grain is simple, elegant, and pleasing, featuring dark brown or black straight silk-like streaks. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, old redwood, along with small-leaf rosewood and yellow-flowered pear, was revered as one of the three "imperial tribute woods" exclusively used by the imperial court.
